Let's Cut Some Spending: $1.9 trillion unaccounted Pentagon spending

In our Let's Cut Some Spending series, ForAmerica chronicles the many ways Washington wastes YOUR tax dollars - and as you’ll see, the list is endless.

Today’s offering: $1.9 trillion in Pentagon spending can’t be accounted for...

The Hill reports:

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) called the Pentagon failing its annual audit “unacceptable” in a post online. “Government agencies need to be held to the same standard as any business in America,” Emmer posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “This is unacceptable.” According to the Department of Defense (DOD) chief financial officer, the Pentagon has failed its annual audit for the sixth year in a row. Only seven of the 29 sub-audits passed this year. All sub-audits are required to pass for the overall audit to be approved... Federal law requires mandatory audits for all government agencies. The Pentagon didn’t start auditing itself until 2018. Auditors found that half of the department’s $3.8 trillion total assets can’t be accounted for. The Department of Defense makes up more than half of the U.S. discretionary spending and its assets range covering personnel, supplies, bases and weapons.

The national debt is $33 trillion. The national deficit in 2022 was $1.4 trillion.

Of the $3.8 trillion in Pentagon assets, $1.9 trillion is unaccounted for.

That's more than the entire national deficit last year.

Obviously we need a military and providing one is a function of the federal government.

But not being able to tell us where $1.9 trillion went... that's worse than "unacceptable."

It's criminal.

So cut their funding by that amount. If they can't account for it, then they didn't need it.
