Are You Proud to Be an American? New Poll Shows Drastic Political Split in National Pride

A new Gallup Poll shows that the gap between Republicans who say they are proud of America and Democrats is wider than it has even been in the last quarter century.

National pride has gone down with young people overall. It has gone down with Democrats overall.

When asked if they were "extremely" or "very proud," 92 percent of Republicans said this.

Democrats? Only 36 percent.

That's a WIDE split.

As for younger Americans, the Washington Examiner reported, "Only 41% of Generation Z said they are 'extremely' or 'very proud' to be American, as patriotism has drastically decreased between each generation. However, Democrats were less likely to be proud to be American in every generation."

"Republican pride started slipping with millennials, with the percentage being in the high 80s since 2001. Now, only 64% of Gen Z Republicans said they are 'extremely' or 'very proud," the Examiner noted.

Gallup also showed that for each new generation of Democrats, national pride drops about ten percent.

"Gen Z Democrats dropped even further than the typical jump, with only 24% of Gen Z Democrats saying they are 'extremely' or 'very proud' to be American," the report said.

The highest the poll has ever gone in reflecting national pride was after the 9/11 attacks in 2001, with 90 percent of all Americans agreed that they were proud of their country.

Jeffrey Jones, a senior editor at Gallup, told the New York Post, "Each generation is less patriotic than the prior generation, and Gen Z is definitely much lower than anybody else. But even among the older generations, we see that they’re less patriotic than the ones before them, and they’ve become less patriotic over time."

"That’s primarily driven by Democrats within those generations," Jones said.

But is this just about various attitudes toward President Trump? Jones cautioned readers on automatically thinking that.

“It’s not just a Trump story,” Jones said. “Something else is going on, and I think it’s just younger generations coming in and not being as patriotic as older people.”

Young people increasingly not having as much national pride as they should is concerning.

But when one major party is constantly telling them that their own country is bad and its president is worse, that has to be at least one major factor in these numbers.
