Brit Hume: Democrats Prove They Are a Permanent Roadblock to Fiscal Sanity

Democrats refused to work with Republicans for well over a month to reopen the government.

Why?

Because they insisted on keeping healthcare subsidies - including to illegal aliens and wealthy people who didn't need them - that were never supposed to be permanent to begin with. That, when Democrats voted on them the first time, in 2021, during the COVID pandemic, they knew they were supposed to be temporary.

Fox News' Brit Hume laid this to bare recently.

Host Bret Baier asked his panel their "thoughts of the political moment here and what we've seen and started to see inside the Democratic Party today."

Hume definitely had thoughts.

"Well, this whole shutdown was a fool's errand from the start," Hume said.

He continued, "This strategy has been tried a number of times before where you try to use the government shutdown and the pressure to get the government reopened as a lever to get something done you couldn't get done by the normal process because you didn't have the votes."

"It has never worked," Hume noted.

Hume later added, “If we cannot as a nation decide not to continue a subsidy that was imposed, or was enacted, during a national health emergency and was designed to be temporary and that all the Democrats voted to have be temporary, if we can’t let that expire, what hope do we ever have of getting government spending under control?”

GOOD question.

Democrats have loved blaming Republicans for holding the country hostage during past shutdowns, but for over a month that's exactly what Democrats did just to hold on to benefits that were never supposed to be permanent.

But as Hume notes, if Democrats can't agree to sunset EVEN THAT, what fiscal hope is there AT ALL for the country?

Republicans have been guilty many times of not living up to their promises to cut spending.

Democrats continue to show themselves as the party who won't even consider it.
