CNN Has Some Bad Shutdown Polling News for Democrats

Throughout the current government shutdown, Democrats have tried to spin the narrative that this is very bad for Donald Trump.

But it hasn't been bad for the president. Not even a little bit.

For the Democrats? It's not good news at all.

CNN's chief data analyst Harry Enten reported on Monday that as the government shutdown continues,  President Trump is doing just fine, particularly compared to the last shutdown.

Enten told his CNN co-host John Berman that “shutdowns are different the second time around when it comes to Donald Trump.”

Enten was citing the results of a new AP-NORC poll.

The 2018-19 shutdown definitely hurt Trump's favorability.

But this time? Trump's popularity hasn't eroded at all. In fact, it has slightly ticked up,

“In 2018/2019, Donald Trump’s approval rating was already falling, the shutdown was eating into his popular support,” Enten said. “It was down three points already at this particular point and would fall considerably more.”

He added, “This shutdown hasn’t eaten into Donald Trump’s support at all – his net approval rating is actually up a point.”

Why is it different this time?

According to Enten, it comes down to who the public blames.

During the 2018-19 shutdown in Trump's first term, 61 percent of Americans said they blamed the president “a great deal.”

Today, that number was sank to 48 percent – a 13-point decline that may explain why Trump appears unfazed by the political standoff.

“It’s a different world,” Enten said, contrasting the two shutdowns.

“It’s no real wonder that Donald Trump at this point, looking at the shutdown, says: ‘You know what, it’s not actually harming me politically, in large part because he’s getting less of the blame," Enten noted.

Democrats want to portray a president who is quaking in his boots over the current government shutdown.

But he's not. The president seems to be playing it cool while watching Democrats bear the brunt of the blame.

Now, we have the numbers to show why this is a smart strategy.

Sorry Dems.
