Can Americans Trust the Next Election?
President Trump didn’t spend his primetime address relitigating the last election. He asked a much bigger question: Can Americans trust the next one?
That’s the conversation Washington has spent years trying to avoid.
Every American, Republican or Democrat, should want elections that are secure, transparent, and beyond legitimate doubt. If foreign governments are attempting to penetrate our election systems, if voter rolls aren’t accurate, or if vulnerabilities exist, fixing those problems shouldn’t be controversial. It should be common sense.
The SAVE America Act is a perfect example. We require identification to board a plane, cash a check, buy certain medications, or enter countless government buildings. Yet some politicians insist verifying identity at the ballot box is somehow an assault on democracy. That argument has never made sense.
Election integrity isn’t about making it harder to vote. It’s about making it impossible to cheat. Every legal vote deserves to be counted, and every illegal vote deserves to be stopped. That’s how confidence in our elections is earned.
A nation that cannot guarantee the integrity of its elections cannot guarantee the integrity of its government. Nothing is more fundamental than ensuring Americans choose their leaders, not bureaucratic incompetence, political gamesmanship, or foreign adversaries.
This debate isn’t going away, and it shouldn’t. The future of self-government depends on getting it right.
