On Thursday, Republican Congressman Byron Donalds blasted Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for comparing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to the Gestapo.

On May 18, Walz referred to ICE agents as President Donald Trump’s “modern-day Gestapo.” Walz made the remark during a commencement speech and in the midst of the administration stepping up its efforts to arrest and deport illegal immigrants.

During a House Oversight Committee hearing on Thursday, Donalds told Walz, “Do you realize how disgusting a phrase that is considering the history of Nazi Germany?”

“Would you like to recant that statement?" Donalds asked.

Walz did not.

Walz replied, “What I said, congressman, and I have a long history of supporting law enforcement, is that President Trump was using them as his modern-day Gestapo, not identifying who you are, coming up in unmarked vans, taking people away."

Donalds reminded Walz that it is ICE's job to arrest and deport illegal aliens.

He also reminded the Democrat that Donald Trump was also doing his job as president.

“The president is doing his job," Donalds Insisted. "So it is sick to refer to Americans who are ICE agents as Gestapo. Governor, you’re wrong."

Donalds continued, "You need to apologize to these agents. They’re doing their jobs. They are Americans, they are serving this country with honor and decency and respect. Do not diminish their work simply because you tried to make a cheap point that you could tweet.”

During his commencement speech last month, Walz said, “Donald Trump’s modern-day Gestapo is scooping folks up off the streets. They’re in unmarked vans, wearing masks, being shipped off to foreign torture dungeons — no chance to mount a defense, not even a chance to kiss a loved one goodbye, just grabbed up by masked agents, shoved into those vans, and disappeared."

"To be clear, there’s no way for us to know whether they were actually criminals or not, because they refused to give them a trial, Walz added.

In the end, there was nothing close to an apology from Tim Walz on Thursday for comparing ICE agents to Nazis.

Which, sadly, isn't the least bit surprising.
