When you're a Democratic candidate and you've lost...
MSNBC?
When it was discovered that Jay Jones, the Democratic candidate for Virginia Attorney General, had sent texts in 2022 about wanting to shoot one of his Republican colleagues and wished his children dead, many called for him to drop out of the race.
"Gilbert gets two bullets to the head," Jones reportedly texted about Republican State House Speaker Todd Gilbert.
He also called Gilbert's children "little fascists."
This was all over his disagreement with Republicans about gun control.
Predictably, Virginia Democrats are still backing him.
But President Donald Trump has said Jones should drop out. So has Vice President JD Vance.
On Monday, so did MSNBC's 'Morning Joe' host Joe Scarborough.
Not exactly a Republican hotbed.
"He should probably be forced to withdraw from the race," Scarborough said Monday.
Scarborough seemed concerned that Jones could hurt former congresswoman and current Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger, who has criticized Jones but not asked him to leave his race.
Scarborough's probably right - and telling Democrats in Virginia something they don't want to hear.
Mika Brzezinski called Jones' text messages "horrible" and also said "I didn't want to read them out loud."Â
MSNBC panelist Jonathan Lemire chimed in, "Yeah, deeply disturbing messages that have been swiftly condemned across the aisle. (Spanberger) did very quickly denounce them."
Lemire continued, "But it’s unclear whether this attorney general candidate will stay in the race. I think there’s a growing sense that he probably should not, we heard President Trump last night... But even some Democratic leaders have started to say like, 'Look, this is inappropriate.' You can’t, and especially at a time right now with such concern about violent rhetoric and political violence."
"Who says that?" Brzezinski asks.
Panelist John Heilemann jumped in, "It’s wildly inappropriate under any circumstances," and added, "This guy should do everyone a favor and step out of that race."
This state race has gained national attention due to the violent rhetoric coming from a man seeking to be Virginia's attorney general using language so awful that the White House has even weighed in.
So has the most leftist cable news outlet and it's morning host. Again, that's bad news for a Democrat.
It will be interesting to see how long candidate Jay Jones lasts.
