Jay Leno Blasts Democrat Partisan Late Night Hosts

It was recently announced that Stephen Colbert's CBS' The Late Show would be cancelled. Costing $100 million annually and losing $40 million each year, it's not hard to see why.

Former Tonight Show host Jay Leno seems to have an idea of why late night talk in this era is failing, and with Colbert, even appears to be going away.

It's because the hosts today are Democrat partisans first, not simply comedians or talk hosts trying to entertain everyone.

Leno says today's hosts are one-sided politically and alienate half the audience.

He made his remarks during an interview with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation President David Trulio.

Leno says he always made jokes about both sides of the ideological spectrum for a reason, prioritizing humor over partisanship.

“Now you have to be content with half the audience because you have to give your opinion,” Leno said.

“Funny is funny… We just discussed jokes," Leno said. "I like to bring people into the big picture.”

“I don’t understand why you would alienate one particular group. Just do what’s funny," he added.

Colbert's cancellation, happening in May 2026, has been protested by other talk hosts, including Jon Stewart, Jimmy Fallon, and John Oliver.

Leno says he will continue to put humor first, leaving the political propaganda to the current generation of late night "hosts."

Leno would add, “I like to think that people come to a comedy show to kind of get away from the things, you know, the pressures of life, whatever it might be,” Leno said. “And I love political humor, don’t get me wrong, but it’s just what happens when people wind up cozying too much to one side or the other."

“You have to be content with half the audience because you have [to] give your opinion," Leno said.

Jay Leno is right. Like his predecessor Johnny Carson, this was originally supposed to be entertainment for everyone. And was. For decades.

Not anymore. Good riddance Stephen Colbert.

And RIP, late night talk shows.
