Joe Biden's early debate with Donald Trump was the beginning of the end of his bid for re-election.
It became clear to millions of Americans that Biden wasn't all there, mentally. This had been clear for some time, but it was made even more so by the president's poor debate performance.
Now we learn thanks to an internal memo obtained by Politico, that Biden's advisers had encouraged him to have an early debate believing it would show "strength" against Trump.
The exact opposite of that actually happened.
Two advisers told Biden in a memo dated April 15, 2024, "By holding the first debate in the spring, YOU will be able to reach the widest audience possible before we are deep in the summer months with the conventions, Olympics and family vacations taking precedence."
Notice that "YOU" and "YOUR" are repeatedly in all caps.
The memo continued, "The earlier YOU are able to debate the better so that the American people can see YOU standing next to Trump and showing the strength of YOUR leadership, compared to Trump's weakness and chaos."
Journalists Josh Dawsey, Tyler Pager, and Isaac Arnsdorf obtained this memo and featured it in their upcoming book "2024: How Trump Retook the White House and the Democrats Lost America."
Biden's debate performance led to him being replaced by his Vice President Kamala Harris as the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee, who was handily beaten by Trump in the general election.
But how did Biden's advisers think this man with obvious cognitive deficiencies was going to do himself any favors by debating Trump early?
Regardless, if you take them at their word in this memo, this is what they thought.
Joe Biden will go down as one of the worst presidents in modern American history, not only for his policies - or lack of, when it came to the U.S.-Mexico border - but his basic inability to do his duty as president.
His poor cognitive health had a lot to do with it.
So did the poor mental health, or basic judgement, of any adviser who thought Joe Biden would look strong against Donald Trump in the first place.
