New Seattle Mayor's Socialist Plan to Force Grocery Stores to Stay Open

New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is not the only socialist to just get elected to run a major American city.

Democrat Katie Wilson, who ran on a socialist platform, also became the mayor-elect of Seattle on Wednesday.

Part of Mamdani's campaign agenda was to establish government-owned grocery stores.

Not surprisingly, mayor-elect Wilson also wants government-run businesses, and has said that private Seattle grocery stores that want to close their doors will be forced to keep them open under her government.

In other words, full blown communism.

After her win, a video from September resurfaced in which then candidate Wilson basically said that grocery stores should be forced to provide food for those who could not afford to pay for it.

Wilson said, “Access to affordable, healthy food is a basic right. We cannot allow giant grocery chains to stomp all over our communities, close stores that will leave behind food deserts."

She added, "Together, we can build a Seattle where fresh food is for everyone, not just for those who can afford it. Food deserts are not natural, corporations create them when they abandon our communities."

This "food for everyone" plan includes not allowing private grocery stores to close.

Wilson called for corporations to give a 90-day notice for mass layoffs and severance packages.

“When grocery corporations lay off hundreds of people overnight, the whole community suffers," the mayor-elect said. "We need to set the standard here in Seattle."

"Corporations must give 90 days notice for mass layoffs and fair severance pay for laid off workers,” she insisted. “Seattle families deserve fresh, affordable food and workers deserve dignity and stability,” Wilson continued.

Who will pay for this free food? Force the private stores to pay? The government?

Socialists are always big on demands and short on answers about how their schemes will be paid for in real life. Wilson's plan, like Mamdani's, is for the state to take over the means of production.

There's a word for that.

If you don't live in Seattle or New York City, maybe we should encourage these new socialist mayors to pursue their wildest communist dreams and let the rest of America see what that actually looks like over time.

If you do live in Seattle or New York City, God help you.
