ForAmerica and Media Research Center President David Bozell interviewed Republican strategist Scott Jennings recently, who has a new book out about President Trump: A Revolution of Common Sense: How Donald Trump Stormed Washington and Fought for Western Civilization.
Jennings had some insight into how Trump's handling of the media is loved by so many voters.
"Scott, you mentioned working for President Bush. You've worked for Senator McConnell. And you've spent a lot of time with President Trump for this book," Bozell noted.
"What is it about President Trump's approach to the media that other Republicans just haven't been able to pick up on and perform as aggressively as he does?" he asked.
"I mean, I was in one of these conservative conspiracy meetings not so long ago..." Bozell added. "Where I listened to a United States senator suggest that he wasn't going to go after the 'Arctic Frost' issue because the media wouldn't cover it. "
Wow. Talk about defeatism. The media and its coverage should determine what Republicans should talk about? "And I just, you know, my chin stinks to my chest. It's like, can you imagine President Trump ever suggesting such a thing? And the answer to that would be no...I guess the question is, You've worked for a cadre of Republicans..."
"What can we do to convince them that the media is out to get them, and you've got to push through them in order to get their agenda across the finish line?"
Jennings replied:
Yeah, it's a really great question. And I think this is maybe the top thing Republicans love the most about Trump is that since he came along, his theory is if they throw a pebble at me, I'm going to throwa boulder back at them..." But when it comes to the media, that is Trump's theory. And Republicans love it. And, you know, I think I've been in this for five years, I think.
Bozell noted, "Voters love it. I don't know about the Republican elected class sometimes."
That's certainly true.
What some Trump critics have portrayed as an unorthodox or bombastic style is actually the president's way of distinguishing himself from virtually every other politician.
In media interviews, he takes no prisoners - and it's exactly what his voters want to see.
If the media attacks, Donald Trump attacks them back, tenfold.
It's not only effective but seems to have been a key part to his success.
Scott Jennings would know.
