The Democrats Need to Get Their House in Order
Democrat Graham Platner - the one with the Nazi tattoo - has suspended his campaign for the U.S. Senate seat in Maine after a former girlfriend accused him of sexual assault. The woman, Jenny Racicot, told Politico that in late 2021 Platner entered her home uninvited while intoxicated and forced himself on her despite her repeated objections. She has described the encounter as rape.
Platner denies the allegation outright, calling any claim of non-consensual behavior “categorically false.” He released a video announcing he was suspending operations, claiming the decision was about protecting “the movement.” Democrats are now scrambling to find a replacement nominee ahead of the July deadline under Maine law.
This was supposed to be a prime pickup opportunity for Democrats. Platner had upset more established candidates in the primary to challenge longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins. Instead, the race has become a showcase of Democratic chaos.
The mainstream media coverage has been notably restrained compared to similar accusations leveled at Republicans. There are no wall-to-wall demands for immediate resignation, no wall-to-wall panels declaring this the end of Platner’s political viability, and no reflexive “believe women” mantra repeated endlessly. The same outlets and activists who spent years insisting that accusations alone were enough to destroy conservative careers are now offering context, nuance, and time for reflection when the accused is a rising star in their own party.
Additional allegations from another ex-girlfriend about non-consensual acts have also surfaced, adding to earlier reports of problematic behavior and past social media controversies. Yet the party that weaponized #MeToo against its opponents suddenly discovers the importance of due process and presumption of innocence.
Maine Democrats are left in disarray. Top national figures have reportedly urged Platner to step aside. The party now faces a rushed process to select a new nominee in a race they had viewed as winnable. What began as an insurgent campaign against an incumbent has ended in familiar Democratic self-inflicted damage.
The pattern is becoming harder to ignore. When allegations hit conservatives, the rules are absolute and unforgiving. When they hit Democrats, the standards shift. Voters watching this unfold in real time see the selective outrage for what it is: a political tool, not a consistent principle.
Platner’s collapse leaves Democrats with less than four months to rebuild in Maine. For a party that lectures everyone else about accountability, the episode is a reminder that their own house remains far from order.
