During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump promised that if re-elected he would declassify the files of John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., all slain by assassins, leaving many lingering questions for well over a half century.
On Thursday, Trump did what he promised: He signed an executive order to declassify these files.
A Trump aide at the White House announced the president was signing the executive action "ordering the declassification of files relating to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. Reverend Martin Luthern King Jr."
Trump said, "That's a big one, huh? A lot of people are waiting for this for a long — for years, for decades."
Trump told the aide to give the pen he used to declassify Robert F. Kennedy's file to his son, Trump's pick to head Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
The elder Kennedy was assassinated while running for president in 1968.
What did people think about this move by Trump?
Conservatives were ecstatic.
Trump is right - Americans have waited a LONG time for this.
Congressman Chip Roy had an excellent point.
Sen. Marsha Blackburn thanked Trump.
So did Sen. Mike Lee.
Is Trump the most transparent president in history?
This really is HUGE.
To be clear, this does not mean the files are automatically declassified with the stroke of a pen, but it does mean Trump is the first president to set the declassification process in motion, and Americans should be glad we might get to discover more about what really happened to these fallen leaders.
As has been said about Donald Trump throughout the week, 'promises made, promises kept.'
And yes, again, this is a big one.
