When President Trump announced late last week that he would slash federal funding of National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), conservatives cheered.
And rightly so. For decades, NPR and PBS have spewed left-leaning content funded in part by American taxpayers.
But it is Congress that ultimately controls spending. Republican Congressman Andy Biggs brought up an important point on Monday.
Trump's is ordering the cuts, but Congress should codify them.
"Congress must immediately codify President Trump's efforts to defund NPR and PBS," Biggs wrote. "If organizations choose to spread lies, mistruths, and propaganda, they can do so on their own dime."
"No taxpayer dollars for propaganda," he added.
Trump issued an executive order on Thursday to end taxpayer funding of these outlets, which the White House accused of spreading, "radical woke propaganda."Â
Trump's order compels the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and other federal agencies "to cease Federal funding for NPR and PBS."
The White House posted a statement on X, saying, "[President Trump] just signed an executive order ENDING the taxpayer subsidization of NPR and PBS – which receive millions from taxpayers to spread radical, woke propaganda disguised as ‘news."
Last month, PBS' President Paula Kerger worried that the Trump administration's desire to cut her outlet's funding would "disrupt the essential service PBS and local member stations provide to the American people."
Kerger added, "There's nothing more American than PBS, and our work is only possible because of the bipartisan support we have always received from Congress. This public-private partnership allows us to help prepare millions of children for success in school and in life and also supports enriching and inspiring programs of the highest quality."
Sorry, Kerger. Rep. Biggs is right: "No taxpayer dollars for propaganda."
Defunding both NPR and PBS is LONG overdue. President Trump is right to do it.
And Congress should make it permanent.
