We Need Another Election to Secure Elections?
John Thune just did what Washington does best: explain why the thing everyone agrees should happen can’t happen.
The SAVE America Act would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and photo ID at the polls. It’s not some radical proposal. Most Americans are probably surprised we’re still debating whether only American citizens should decide American elections.
But Thune says Republicans don’t have the votes to pass it this year. Maybe after the next election, when there are more Republicans in the Senate, the math changes.
And there it is: We need another election before we can pass election security.
Only Washington could come up with a sentence like that.
Republicans have the House. Republicans have the Senate. Republicans have the White House. They campaigned on election integrity. They told voters it was a priority.
Now the Senate Majority Leader is explaining why it’s too difficult.
That’s where Americans lose patience. Nobody back home is sitting around the dinner table debating Senate procedure or the finer points of the filibuster. They’re asking a much simpler question: If you believe in something, why aren’t you fighting for it?
President Trump has pushed Republicans to find a path forward, including changing Senate rules if necessary. Thune says there aren’t enough votes for that either.
Maybe that’s true.
But there is a difference between saying, “We have a difficult fight ahead,” and saying, “Come back after the next election.”
The American people did not hand Republicans control of Washington so they could become experts in explaining why their campaign promises have to wait.
They gave them power to produce results.
The SAVE America Act may or may not become law this year. But Republicans should remember something: voters are far more forgiving of a fight that ends in defeat than a surrender that begins before the fight even starts.
