The Senate is Up to No Good.
The SAVE America Act is very high on the Republican agenda with 95% support among the party. The House passed the bill with no problems, but the Senate is failing to move the bill. Leader Thune has promised a vote on the bill, but it won’t pass without the Senate restoring the talking filibuster - something that four Republicans aren’t supporting.
Senators Thom Tillis, John Curtis, Mitch McConnell, and Lisa Murkowski are standing in the way of passing the SAVE America Act. One of the complaints is that the talking filibuster ties the Senate up from other activities while the debate happens, so other business can’t be had until the bill is passed, but it’s a ludicrous claim to say the Senate doesn’t have the time.
The Senate has found time for a housing bill, a dog parade (it’s exactly what it sounds like), and have maintained a schedule so bulletproof that President Trump hasn’t been able to get any recess appointments through. What the Senate is doing is diabolical and current leadership isn’t doing much about it.
It’s worth noting that Sen. Cornyn of Texas is in a tight primary runoff against Attorney General Paxton, whose support largely comes from Republicans that are fed up with the establishment do-nothings in the Senate. AG Paxton this week even offered to end his campaign in exchange for Senate Republicans doing their job and passing the SAVE America Act.
Paxton believes in the bill that much because the bill is that important. There is no wiggle room, no quarter to be given, and no reason to support any Republican that fail to advance the signature piece of legislation to come out of this Congress.
