With Republicans Like This, Who Needs Democrats?
In a setback for conservative priorities, Republican Senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Thom Tillis, and Mitch McConnell broke ranks with their party to block the SAVE America Act from advancing in the Senate.
Republicans had been working to add the SAVE America Act to the reconciliation package - a bold plan that would secure our elections and protect citizens’ voting rights, if only Republicans had the will power to get it done. Instead of supporting it, four GOP Senators chose to play hero for the other side.
Susan Collins, the Maine moderate who has drifted left for years, is now paying the price—she’s losing to a literal Nazi in her own state. Lisa Murkowski remains a reliable vote for the left on every major issue. Thom Tillis is so unelectable that he’s quietly leaving office before voters get the chance to throw him out themselves. And Mitch McConnell, the ghost that still haunts the Senate, continues to undermine Republican priorities long after his time as leader has passed.
The SAVE America Act deserved a vote. Republican voters deserved better.
Fortunately, the broader story remains one of success. While a handful of Republicans chose to stand in the way, President Trump and congressional Republicans continue to deliver results for working Americans.
The latest jobs report wasn’t supposed to happen, at least according to the experts. Instead, the economy added 172,000 jobs in May, blowing past expectations and providing another reminder that pro-growth policies still work.
Democrats spent years insisting America had to accept decline. The numbers keep telling a different story. Americans are working, businesses are hiring, and the economy continues to outperform the predictions of the same people who said it couldn’t be done.
