Murdering Children is Wrong.
The Clancy trial ended Friday in a mistrial after a jury spent days unable to decide whether strangling three children is a crime. Lindsay Clancy sent her husband out, took Cora, Dawson, and Callan into the basement, and killed them one by one with exercise bands. None of that was disputed.
After a six-week trial and roughly 38 hours of deliberations, the jury still could not reach a unanimous verdict. Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial. The charges remain. The district attorney now decides whether to retry her, reduce the charges, or cut a deal. Clancy remains in a psychiatric hospital. The three dead children still have no verdict.
Killing children is wrong. Apparently, we needed six weeks of testimony and 38 hours of jury deliberations to workshop that proposition.
The defense offered postpartum psychosis, medications, psychiatrists and dueling experts. Fine. Explain her condition. Explain her state of mind. Explain every pill in the cabinet if you want. But somewhere along the way, the justice system became so impressed with the explanation that it nearly misplaced the act itself: a mother strangled her three children, one after another.
That should not be intellectually exhausting.
The political spectacle outside the courthouse was somehow worse. Hundreds of women in pink rallied under signs reading “Peace for Lindsay,” “You’re a good mom,” and “the system failed her.” Organizers said any of them could have been sitting in her chair. Some even brought their own children.
Wonderful. Nothing says moral clarity quite like bringing your kids to a rally for a woman who killed hers.
Cora, Dawson and Callan became scenery in somebody else’s cause. The story was no longer three murdered children. It was maternal health, misunderstood women, bad medicine, a failed system and, eventually, sympathy for Lindsay. Everybody got a constituency except the kids.
A mistrial guarantees another round of it. More experts. More diagnoses. More arguments over whether plainly monstrous conduct should be described in language soft enough to make everybody comfortable.
The law can recognize mental illness without losing the ability to recognize evil. It had better. Because when a jury spends days wondering whether strangling three children counts as a crime, the problem is no longer just one defendant.
The adults have lost the plot.
