A Strong Majority of Democrats Want States to Throw Trump Off Their Ballots

National Archives/Public Domain

Many Democrats love to talk about 'threats to democracy' by Republicans and most specifically, Donald Trump.

But as polls show, Democrats are also the most eager to prevent democracy from happening.

National Review reports:

Eighty one percent of Democrats believe states should disqualify former president Donald Trump from presidential ballots, according to a new CBS News/YouGov poll.
By contrast, 90 percent of Republicans believe states should keep Trump’s name on the ballot.
Independents are more closely split: 44 percent believe states should remove Trump’s name from ballots, while 56 percent believe states should allow Trump’s name to remain on ballots.

NR continued:

Both Colorado and Maine have disqualified Trump from their respective primary ballots because his actions in the wake of the 2020 election allegedly violated Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which forbids individuals who have 'engaged in insurrection' from seeking federal office.

The story noted:

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, a Democrat, ruled last month that Trump is disqualified from the state’s ballot in response to three legal challenges against the former president’s ballot eligibility in the state.

For argument's sake, let's pretend the Capitol Hill riot on January 6, 2021 really was an "insurrection" (it was not, but just play along here).

Democrats are saying they don't want voters to have the option to vote for the most likely nominee of their rival party. Actual democracy - one man, one vote, fair and square - they are opposed to it if it means allowing people to support Trump.

This is the stuff of banana republics. This is what political leaders in third world nations do.

This is the exact opposite of holding a democratic election.

But as this poll shows, it's what most Democrats want. It's likely that the Supreme Court will ultimately decide if keeping Donald Trump off ballots is constitutional.

In the meantime, Democrats should reconsider the name of their party.
