Jesus, Take the Wheel: United Will Reroute You Away From Trump's Name

Nothing screams "corporate courage" quite like quietly helping your customers avoid a president's name on a building.

Palm Beach International Airport officially became President Donald J. Trump International Airport on July 9, following a Florida law requiring the change. United Airlines' response? An internal memo instructing reservation agents to offer free flight changes to Fort Lauderdale or Miami for any customer who didn't want to land at an airport with the president's name on it. The memo even scripted the pitch for agents: "I understand that you'd rather not fly to this airport anymore. We can look at nearby airports like Fort Lauderdale or Miami instead."

"If a customer does not want to fly to the airport, use your empowerment to offer acceptable alternatives such as Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) or Miami International Airport (MIA)."

After the memo leaked and the backlash rolled in, United backpedaled, telling a local CBS affiliate the messaging was "poorly worded" and that customers can already change tickets fee-free for plenty of reasons. Funny how none of those other reasons ever needed their own script. Airports have carried presidents' names for decades -- Reagan National, JFK, Bush Intercontinental -- without major airlines rolling out a rebooking hotline for people who couldn't bear to deplane near the name.
