Gavin Newsom Needs a Math Lesson
Tuesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom responded to a story that President Trump "told Texas Republicans on a call this morning that the GOP will seek to get 5 new red seats in the mid-decade redistricting effort in Texas." Newsom said, "two can play at that game," as if California wasn't a premier example of gerrymandering as it is.
We did the math.
If Texas were to apportion their congressional districts the same way that California does, Texas would give 5 additional seats to Republicans - the exact number Newsom is bemoaning.
It's the classic Democrat mantra: accuse your opponents of doing the thing you are currently doing.
Texas needs to redistrict, and all red states need to redistrict in the same way that the Democrats have. Republicans are being shorted by a number of seats by not following the same playbook. Not to mention, the 2020 census was blundered. Red states were shorted at least 3 congressional seats from the census overcounting blue states and undercounting red ones.
And in addition to all of that, the census counts illegal immigrants the same as citizens. Meaning that states with higher illegal immigrant populations get more representation in Congress and more electoral college votes. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green has proposed a bill to redo the census, and with President Trump's endorsement we are tracking its progress. It's a must-pass piece of legislation. Republicans are working with a narrow majority in the House but it shouldn't be narrow. Democrats have stolen - intentionally or not - numerous House seats and are undermining the accuracy of our elections, Congress, and political scene around the country.
