Federalism and Transparency Are on the Thanksgiving Menu
Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and Americans have plenty to be grateful for — including real momentum on an issue ForAmerica has been calling for since our inception: dismantling the Department of Education.
Â
This week, the White House highlighted what the recent Democrat-led shutdown quietly revealed: 90 percent of the Department of Education’s staff were furloughed, and the country didn’t miss a beat. Nothing collapsed. Nothing broke. Parents, teachers, and students carried on — proof of what we’ve been saying all along.
Â
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt went further, announcing that the DOE has now begun formal inter-agency agreements to move more of its remaining duties to other executive branches. The department is shrinking — in staff, in authority, and in purpose — exactly the direction ForAmerica has long argued it should go.
Â
And it’s overdue. The federal government has spent more than $3 trillion on the DOE since Jimmy Carter created it, with student performance declining during the same period. Washington’s education bureaucracy has become a bloated, ineffective middleman. The shutdown simply exposed it.
Â
ForAmerica has been pushing for years to return education decisions to states, localities, and parents — where they belong. Now, with the DOE’s responsibilities being peeled away, Americans are finally seeing the first glimpse of that vision: real federalism and real transparency in education.
Â
Heading into Thanksgiving, that’s something worth celebrating.
Funniest Things:
The shoe is on the other foot.
Winning and winning some more.
It's anyone's guess...
Thanks for reading today's Cannon.
