You've Been Paying for Your Own Demise
Last Saturday, we talked about the House Freedom Caucus’ 16-point agenda that was laid out in their letter to Speaker Mike Johnson. The first agenda item was securing American elections, but as we alluded to, there is so much more in here that are no-brainers for any conservative member of Congress to support.
The HFC wants to “pass fraud-free and fiscally responsible appropriations,” or more simply, stop overspending and root out the fraud. Both are long overdue.
This spending and fraud halt calls to reduce federal discretionary spending, or “at a bare minimum” stop Congress from increasing the number. Discretionary spending is spending that isn’t required by law to continue, like Social Security, veterans’ benefits, Medicare, interest on debt, and more. However you feel about those line items, and regardless of how badly reform is needed, Congress is extremely limited in what they can do to change it. About a quarter of the federal budget, however, is discretionary and Congress gets to decide how much we spend — and what we spend it on. Discretionary spending is where we need to begin to make cuts.
The fraud that the Freedom Caucus is taking aim at are the violations that have been identified through DOGE and through the groundbreaking reporting in Minnesota that revealed billions of dollars that went to Somali day care centers, meal programs, housing, special needs programs, and more that were defrauding the taxpayers at alarming rates. We can be sure that it isn’t a phenomenon isolated to Minnesota, but a pattern that is happening across the country. Recent estimates according to watchdog agencies are that the federal government burns between $233 and $521 billion dollars a year through fraud — over a quarter of the total deficit funding everything from corrupt pockets to terrorist organizations in Somalia. Enough is enough!
The final subpoint in rooting out fraud and passing fiscally responsible spending bills is a commitment from the Freedom Caucus to “ensure not a single taxpayer dollar is given to refugee resettlement, migrant assistance, DEI programs, transgender agendas, climate change nonsense, or any other ‘woke’ leftist priority.” The simple fact that any of that needs to be said is astounding — the federal government has been taking dollars out of your paycheck and using them to relocate third-world migrants into your community. It’s an awful deal. The federal government is perpetrating a situation on you that you don’t like, and you get to pay for it. It’s asinine and at least the conservative members of Congress agree that it needs to be stopped. The rest of the GOP need to follow suit.
