Texas Voters Reaffirmed Support for President Trump

John Cornyn just learned a painful lesson: Republican voters are no longer grading on seniority.

On Tuesday night, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton steamrolled Cornyn in the Republican Senate runoff, ending the career of one of Washington’s longest-serving Republican incumbents in brutal fashion. The race was called quickly. The message was even quicker.

Republican voters are done with Republicans who campaign like Trump and govern like Mitch McConnell.

For years, Cornyn survived by being “next in line,” “well respected,” and “experienced.” Republican primary voters looked at all of that and basically replied: “Great. What exactly have you done?”

The base sent Republicans to Washington to secure the border, pass the SAVE America Act, stop the weaponization of government, restore election integrity, unleash American energy, and actually fight the Left. Voters did not hand Republicans power so senators could host donor lunches, issue carefully worded statements, and explain why now is not the right time.

Trump eventually endorsed Paxton after it became obvious where the race was headed, but the result still says something important about the Republican Party. Republican voters increasingly want fighters, not caretakers. They want people willing to use power, not simply occupy office space in Washington for twenty years while talking about process.

Cornyn’s defeat is bigger than Texas. Republican voters are starting to treat primaries like performance reviews.

The warning lights are flashing for every Republican senator and congressman currently slow-walking the agenda. The grassroots are watching closely. The excuses are getting old. And voters are increasingly willing to replace Republicans who behave like temporary hall monitors standing in the way of the very movement that elected them.

Washington Republicans have a choice: help pass the agenda voters demanded in 2024, or start packing boxes.

The old Republican playbook of “say MAGA things at election time and govern like it’s 2005” is collapsing in real time. John Cornyn just became the latest casualty.
